There’s a reason the girls’ lacrosse team at Good Counsel has won four straight championships—perseverance. It didn’t matter that Bishop Ireton was undefeated in WCAC play heading into Tuesday afternoon’s game. It didn’t matter that the Falcons had lost six games this season. And it didn’t matter that only four seniors make up the 2008 roster. Just like in the past, Good Counsel found a way to get it done, and Tuesday’s 11-5 victory over Ireton was a perfect example.

Good Counsel freshman Kelly Lechner led the way for the Falcons, scoring three goals while her sister, Shannon, a sophomore, scored one goal and recorded one assist. The Lechner sisters are two of 16 underclassmen listed on the team’s roster. Seven of those underclassmen stood out Tuesday. In addition to the Lechner’s performance, Jamie D’arco (1 assist), Kelsey Conway (2 goals, 1 assist), Caileigh Sindall (1 goal), Molly Shawhan (1 assist) and Christina Sheridan (9 saves) all contributed for the Falcons.

Good Counsel (11-6, 6-0) also got offensive contributions from their seniors. Kristen Oakley (1 goal) and Mary Swarthout (2 goals, 2 assists) performed well while junior Kate Corboy scored one goal and recorded an assist in the victory. The Falcons can win the regular season outright and take the No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a victory over O’Connell May 3rd.

Bishop Ireton, who fell to 14-3 and 6-1 in WCAC play, has completed their regular season and will have to wait until May 5th to play their next game. Although the Cardinals came up short Tuesday, Lauren Gray (2 goals), Maria Bowman (1 goal), Brittany Barnwell (1 goal) and Allie Fife (1 goal) all scored on the afternoon. Ireton scored a league high 219 goals over their 17-game regular season.

The WCAC play-in game is scheduled for this Saturday while the quarterfinals (5/5), semifinals (5/8) and finals (5/12) follow shortly after. DCSportsFan will provide coverage of each round.
