On the Bubble: St. Andrew’s (14-11, 7-4 and ISL-A Runner-Up), Elizabeth Seton (13-15, 7-11)
10. Sidwell Friends (21-5, 11-1)
Sidwell had a terrific season in the ISL A and they ended up winning their conference, and tourney championship, in convincing fashion. It is hard to move them up because of the lack of high-quality opponents, but next year they will have their opportunity with match-ups against Stone Ridge, Flint Hill, Bullis, Visitation, and others. Tiara Woods is a rising star and leader and she will need to pick up even more responsibility with the graduation of four key seniors this year. Next Up: Season Complete
9. Bullis (21-7, 10-4)
The Bulldogs finished the year up-and-down, first topping Stone Ridge in the regular season but then losing big to Flint Hill in the tourney behind Audrey Dotson’s double-double. This will still be a young team next year but the potential is so crystal clear. Lynee’ Belton could be the freshman of the year in any private school league and should be even more of a force next year. Next Up: Regular Season Complete
8. Stone Ridge (21-7, 10-4)
Up by ten points heading into the third quarter against Visitation, the Gators gave up a 22-6 run to just miss going to the ISL AA finals. Still, this team had a great year behind Tish Hopewell and juniors Jen and Jo Farrell and they should definitely be in the hunt come next year. They’ve already proven they can hang with the best in the ISL AA -- it’s just been a matter of consistency. Next Up: Regular Season Compete
7. Flint Hill (25-6, 10-4)
Wow. Before the ISL AA tourney began, it looked like perhaps the Huskies had played their best. But behind some amazing performances from Audrey Dotson (an unreal 34 points in the ISL AA Championship vs. Visitation) and Alex Long (19 points in the Virginia State Quarters vs. Ireton) these Lady Huskies won seven in a row, including the ISL AA Tournament. The Huskies advanced all the way to the Virginia State finals but lost to Paul VI Saturday night. Next Up: Season completed
6. Paul VI (19-12, 10-8)
Once again the Panthers ran into McNamara and -- once again -- the Mustangs stopped them cold during the WCAC playoffs. This team, however, beat Flint Hill Saturday to win the Virginia State title for the fifth consecutive year. Leading scorer Marlena Tremba is only a sophomore, so that bodes well for the next couple of seaons. Next Up: Season Completed
5. McNamara (19-10, 12-6)
Like Good Counsel, the McNamara Lady Mustangs just a had a tough time matching up with St. John’s and could never get over the hump against their rival. Taylor Brown now leaves behind a legacy of stellar individual play and leadership and hopefully someone—or several teammates—can pick up the mantle. Four of the top five scorers this year are underclassmen, so next year’s team should be pretty balanced. Next Up: Season Complete
4. Georgetown Visitation (26-2, 14-0)
Visitation had a tremendous regular season but perhaps ran out of gas in the ISL AA tourney. Down ten to Stone Ridge in the semis, the Cubs mounted a furious comeback and won. Then, down eleven in the third to Flint Hill, they scratched back to actually pull ahead with about a minute left—only to fall to a brilliant performance by Audrey Dotson. Still, this team won the ISL AA by four games in the regular season and with the entire core returning, including leading scorer Kate Gillespie, the sky truly is the limit for Mike McCarthy’s bunch. Next Up: Bishop Walsh Tournament
3. Holy Cross (24-6, 15-3)
It was sometimes tough to predict which Holy Cross team would show up but we thought a WCAC Championship game appearance was perhaps a given. Unfortunately though, they ran into their bugaboo of the year, Good Counsel, and now they will look to center Lanay Montgomery and others to step up for their senior season. Losing some key seniors will hurt, but this team has the talent to be back in the discussion for WCAC champ next year. Next Up: Bishop Walsh Tournament
2. Good Counsel (27-4, 15-3)
The Falcons had an up-and-down WCAC playoffs that ultimately culminated with a loss in the championship game to our No. 1, St. John’s. Before that though, the team showed its tremendous promise by crushing Holy Cross—a game in which junior Faith Randolph caught fire and scored an amazing 17 straight points. There is so much youth and potential here that Head Coach Tom Splaine has to be feeling good about the future, so expect several more classics with the Cadets to come soon. Only this time, Good Counsel will look to be on the winning side. Next Up: Bishop Walsh Tournament
1. St. John's (29-2, 17-1)
The Cadets celebrated a return to WCAC dominance on Monday after taking care of business a third time against rival Good Counsel, 62-54. Now headed back to the DC City Championship, they’ll hope not to repeat 2004, a year where they won the WCAC only to lose a heartbreaker to Theodore Roosevelt. Expect leaders like Mariah Jones and Mooriah Rowser to bring their best to Verizon Center on Monday, but don’t expect a walk in the park against H.D. Woodson, either. Next Up:City Title against DCIAA Champion H.D. Woodson, Monday, 5:30 Tip
