“Let’s go Maryland!” echoed throughout the gym at T.C. Williams Saturday at the 39th annual Capital Classic. The event could’ve been mistaken for Maryland Madness at the Comcast Center with five future Terrapins in action.
The United States all-star team, led by five future Terps, including guard Sam Cassell Jr., who announced he would go to Maryland prior to tipoff, won 105-93.
The five future Terps—power forward Charles Mitchell, shooting guard Seth Allen, power forward Damonte Dodd, center Shaquille Cleare and Cassell-- who some fans were already dubbing the new Fab-Five, combined to score 49 of the team’s 105 points.
Of the five future Terps who competed, three were bigs who are looking to beef up the Terps frontline. “I feel like we can do big things,” said Mitchell.
Local stars on the Capital all-star team also left one final mark. Paul VI’s Patrick Holloway and Coleman Johnson combined for fifteen points, Episcopal’s Kethan Savage and Arnaud Adala Moto added 12 more. Meanwhile, Riverdale Baptist’s Brandon Peel scored six points, Coolidge’s Khalen Cumberlander added six more, and Landon’s Joe McDonald scored nine.
Future Virginia Tech Hokie Montrezl Harrell was named MVP for his game-high 24 points.
After the game, the five future Terps even smack-talked with some of their future ACC foes.
“All of us have grown up playing each other,” said Mitchell. “We knew some of them were going to the ACC and we just had to mess with them.”
In the earlier game, the Suburban all-stars outlasted the District all-stars 109-100.
The District squad was led by MVP Montrose Christian’s Kevin Laren’s 22 points. Paul VI’s Tilman Dunbar added 16 points. Other local stars who had good showings were Sidwell’s Jamal Lewis (11 points) and Potomac’s Cullen Hamilton (14 points) while Carroll’s Justin Alston added 12 points.
