In a hard-fought game on Tuesday afternoon, St. John’s was able to continue their perfect league season with a 2-1 victory over the Bishop Ireton Cardinals. Ireton provided good pitching along with excellent fielding to give the Cadets a run for their money. Nick Tangora pitched a solid game for the Cardinals, pitching six full innings only giving up five hits.
After recording two strikeouts in the bottom of the 1st, Tangora’s lone mishap walked to the plate in the form of senior outfielder Abram White. White blasted a solo shot over the right field wall to give St. John’s a 1-0 lead headed into the third inning.
Ireton, however, wasted no time knotting the game back up. After a leadoff single by Kyle Delaney, junior Corey Phillips legged out a double, which left him and Delaney in scoring position. Just minutes later, Delaney scored off a single by Jake Guttman.
Then it was the Cadets turn at the plate. After Tangora’s lone walk sent St. John’s Kyle Hamer to first, a wild pitch put him into scoring position at second base. St. John’s regained a 2-1 lead off a single by Billy Webb.
After that point, Ireton was able to tie the game back up. As the Cardinals couldn’t find their offense, they were lucky to keep the game as close as it was.
They benefitted from double plays along with a fortunate bounce that struck a St. John’s runner whom was certain to score in the base path, resulting in an automatic out.
St. John’s finished off the tough victory as closer Alex Deise struck out the final two batters of the day. The Cadets will look to continue their stellar season against Good Counsel on Saturday.
Bishop Ireton will look to improve their playoff positioning versus St. Mary’s Ryken Thursday.
