Detroit Lions linebacker Justin Durant is one of eight former Hampton Pirates in NFL training camps this season.

Playing in the NFL is the goal of every kid that straps on a helmet, from Pop Warner to college football. The reality is, only a small number of men ever attain that goal. Even the majority of the thousands of young men who receive scholarships to play the sport in college never sniff the professional ranks.

It’s the same story for athletes competing at Historically Black Colleges and Universities these days. In the days before mass integration, HBCUs were gold mines for overlooked professional talent. Even after major colleges began to recruit black players heavily, these schools still managed to find diamonds in the rough like Mississippi Valley State’s Jerry Rice and Alcorn State’s Steve McNair in the 80s and 90s. But in today’s technologically advanced world where major colleges begin scouting players before their first high school games, such finds are fewer and further between.

As the NFL teams begin training camp, there are currently 59 players listed on team rosters. Hampton leads all HBCUs with a total of eight alumni competing for roster spots, including former Pirate defensive linemen Kendrick Ellis and Marcus Dixon. Bethune-Cookman and Jackson State came in second with four players each. Alabama State, Alcorn State, FAMU, Grambling State, Howard, Morgan State and South Carolina State all had three players.

The Jacksonville Jaguars currently have a league-high five players from HBCUs on their roster. The Indianapolis Colts feature four HBCU products, including veteran Alabama A&M product Robert Mathis.

Just the other day I was trying to explain to someone presumed to be a Hampton graduate that HBCU doesn't necessarily mean "small market."

This list might shed some light as to why I choose to base my opinion on the HBCU rather than just comparing them to mega-market schools and judging them somehow inferior.

Instead, I'm focusing on the apparent opportunities that HBCU players get at the next level and I can see that HBCU's fare relatively well.  I can think of other schools that don't have as many players as some on this list without calling them "small market" schools.

Coop- You may be referring to me and that's cool, but once again, you might have misunderstood me.  I was not calling the HBCU an "inferior" school.  I was referring to them being a smaller venue, in some cases as student population and/or money revenue on a consistant basis compared to a Mich, Penn State, FSU, or UGA.  So many of these young HS school players get hung up on D1 BCS schools, that they may miss a greater opportunity at a HBCU.

You're good peeps and I have no problem with where you stand.  I'll just chalk this as a misunderstanding. I'm glad that I transferred out of a BCS school to a HBCU, it was a better fit for me.

@Eagles81

Great topic!!! As a former HBCU Football player there are 2 things that really make a difference between your mega D1 universities and your HBCU's are Money, and the size of there Linemen (no the quality). The skill positions are of the same quality.

@juju42

I agree there is a huge money disparity. The biggest difference is scholarships. D-1(FBS) has 85 scholarships, and D-1 (FCS) has 65 scholarships. However the SWAC prefer mammoth size lineman.
