Football Scrimmages?
Good Counsel is not the only school playing a game on the weekend of August 24th. No one else is playin a game of that magnitude, but there are 1/2 dozen games on the 24th and 25th.

Sorry......Not sure what scrimmage Eagles saw but it is a big stretch to say GZ "put the wood" to FCA. IMO the scrimmage was very even. That was somewhat of a surprise as many...including GZ followers.........expected FCA to handle them. FCA did not handle them and the team portion was even. In the one-on-one drills FCA was dominant.....especially the FCA d-line -vs- GZ o-line. GZ does have a few o-linemen out with injury. Since the drills were before the team portion it looked as if FCA should dominate. However, the drill domination did not transfer to the team portion. FCA was bigger, stronger, deeper and faster......but it did not show in the 11 on 11 scrimmage. To say FCA has problems and not acknowledge that GZ really struggled on offense as well shows a big time bias.
IMO both looked pretty good for the first scrimmage. Neither offense did much and the defenses on both sides were way ahead. That can be expected this early in the year.

Both showed decent ability to stop runs up the middle. It was pretty even on the varsity end. GZ threatened to score once--receiver tackled at the 2 yrd. FC never got inside the 10 on any one play. But these type of scrimmages basically show if your o-line and d-lines are porous. I think things would have gotten better for both squads but "lightening" squashed the scrimmage. For GZ's 2nd day in full pads they weren't the creampuffs some folk thought they'd be.
Gilman on Sunday (mentioning that school may bring out Greyhound out of his gennie bottle, I think that's his handle, right?) will be interesting. Will they still run the same offense? Will Cockerille fresh from the Elite 11 simply tuck and run everything? We knew about Jennings and Jones but who is their guy this year.
Good Counsel and Eastern Christian Academy tomorrow at 10. Any word on DM's and SJC's scrimmages?

Zag/FCA scrimmage was even...that is accurate. FCA absolutely dominated the one on one portion.
Haden was out and the Malone kid was out for Zag...defintely a good showing by both defenses....as usual the offenses are a little behind early in camp.
LOL @ Zag put the wood to FCA.....both teams brought the wood on defense.

Checked out GC vs ECA. GC remains top dog. I don't get all the hype regarding ECA. The QB is not that good. He missed several open receivers, he even threw a few McNabb sinkers. The best ball he threw all day was picked by GC's young corner (#2)--ball should not have been thrown. Truly a 7on7 star--but in pads and a defensive linemen running at him--he's not that special--at least he wasn't today.
Kudos to GC's center, kid held his own--made Bigelow a non-factor. Bigelow did come with pressure on 1 play, but oh wait, it was a screen. I was expecting to see the same dominate kid I saw all summer that sped past opponents in 1 on 1s. I don't know GC's center's name but he handled himself very well today.
Mike Ferrell/Rivals needs to evaluate the players based on their work in pads and not hype them based on touchball and 1 on 1s.

MaxPreps 2012 Maryland preseason football Fab 5
Our Lady of Good Counsel begins 2012 as Maryland's top team, but watch for Gilman, Eastern Christian, DeMatha and Quince Orchard.
MaxPreps 2012 Maryland Preseason Fab 5 presented by the Army National Guard
1. Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney)
2011 finish: 12-0
Head coach: Bob Milloy
Team Preview
Good Counsel beat Manatee and Gilman before cruising to yet another WCAC title last season. In 2012, the Falcons could prove to be even stronger (Good Counsel is ranked No. 10 in the Preseason Xcellent 25). Bob Milloy's squad needs to replace two-way star Stefon Diggs, but there's plenty of firepower on both sides of the ball, led by quarterback Brendan Marshall and defensive back Kendall Fuller. Michael Konrad and Sam Mustipher lead the offensive and defensive lines, respectively. A Sin City tilt with Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) will be a good litmus test for Good Counsel, which will contend for a national No. 1 finish.
2. Gilman (Baltimore)
2011 finish: 10-1
Head coach: Biff Poggi
Team Preview
Gilman has joined Good Counsel in representing Maryland in discussions about top programs nationally. The Greyhounds have churned out several blue-chip recruits in recent years and have plenty of talent again in 2012. Maryland commit Shane Cockerille will once again be in charge of the offense while Henry Poggi, son of head coach Biff, will power the defense. This year's schedule is challenging: Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), Good Counsel and Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) are its first three opponents. Gilman tops our list of the Top 10 most consistent football programs in Maryland, and you can find Gilman on our list of Maryland state football champions for the past 10 years.
3. Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton)
2011 finish: n/a
Head coach: Dwayne Thomas
In its first year of existence, Eastern Christian Academy is comprised mostly of players who suited up for Red Lion Christian Academy (Bear, Del.). There's plenty of talent at this first-year school, including three USC-bound recruits: Kenny Bigelow, Khaliel Rodgers and sophomore quarterback David Sills. The schedule is still not set in stone, but will likely feature teams from around the country.
4. DeMatha (Hyattsville)
2011 finish: 6-4
Head coach: Elijah Brooks
Team Preview
A traditional powerhouse in the I-95 area, DeMatha will look to rebound from a 6-4 season under the leadership of second-year head coach Elijah Brooks. Brooks' second season had its share of challenges, including the tragic death of Rico Webb. This fall, the Stags should be improved. Quarterback Roman Williams returns, as do top targets Cam Phillips and Chris Jones. Spencer Kleinrichert is back at linebacker. Both lines will be big and talented. Keep an eye on freshman defensive end Shane Simmons, who already boasts several Division I offers. DeMatha will need to replace four players found on the list of Class of 2012 Maryland Division 1 signees.
5. Quince Orchard (Gaithersburg)
2011 finish: 13-1
Head coach: Dave Mencarini
Team preview
Quince Orchard is arguably Maryland's most consistent public school program and will not miss a beat entering the 2012 season. This year's squad is loaded, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Marcus Newby, a linebacker committed to Nebraska, is the unit's marquee player, but Tyrell Williams, Kieran Gregory and Malcolm Brown are among the returning starters. Quince Orchard is tied for fifth in our June, 2011 list of the Top 10 Maryland football dynasties. Also, search for Quince Orchard players on our list of 2011 Maryland All-League football teams.

The scrimmage was broken up into 2 halfs. First it was 30 plays a piece for each offense. The first team kids got 20 and second/third teams got the last 10. Dematha hit a slant for a long td on a blown coverage. Other than that neither team really drove the ball. The second half was game situation. FCA drove on thier 1st possesion and scored. DM answered with another big play, this time on a missed tackle on a toss. Friendship drove its next possesion but threw a pic. Dematha could never really get a drive going against the FCA defense. It got stopped early because of lightning
