Congrats to the St. John's Cadets baseball team as they won their 4th consecutive championship today beating a tough DeMatha squad 6-1. SJC won game 1 Saturday by a score of 9-5.
A dynasty, as defined, is a succession of people from the same family who play a prominent role in business, politics, or another field. So, technically speaking, SJC's run of success does not constitute a dynasty. That said, it has been an impressive run of WCAC championships. Kudos to them for that.
Oh I've heard it and seen it. And never once has it been used correctly. Great runs in sports, by definition, cannot be dynasties. To call them such redefines the meaning of the word. Furthr, to refer to such sports "dynasties" such as the Steelers short lived "dynasty" of the 1970s is an insult to actual dynasties such as the Tang Dynasty which spanned over 300 years. That said, this does not diminish the impressive run by SJC baseball. Congrats to them on that.
Actually it might qualify as a dynasty since the current coach is the son of the previous coach. Both highly successful with at least 7 WCAC tournament championships between them and close to 50 college bound baseball players. Ed Gibbs and Mark have run SJC baseball from 1991- current day.
Well now we may have a claim to a dynasty. Thank you for sharing this historical knowledge. The Gibbs family is to WCAC baseball what the Kim family is to North Korea politics. Kudos to them for nearly 3 decades of success.
Or so the Red-controlled media of St. John's College High School would want you to believe. The "Cadets" (or should I say, future "comrades") have long controlled the flow of information at that school.
Four straight titles is most impressive.....Since the WCAC was established in 1993 (after the WCAC) -- total baseball crowns: DeMatha 10, St. John's 7, PVI 4, Good Counsel 2, O'Connell 1. DeMatha won five straight titles from 1994-1998 and three straight 2002-2004.
