27 arrests.....some of them students. I heard there were 27 arrests, but only 3 were students, the rest were PG locals. Just like after the NC they won, only a handful were students that got arrested, the rest drove in from Laurel, etc. because it was an excuse for them to riot. I wouldn't call lighting a trashcan on fire or hanging out on Rt. 1 rioting, I was there and that was hardly the case. The police if anything started the mob mentality by showing up on horseback with riot gear and pepper spray before anything happened. And nothing happened that I saw..

Hanging out on route one? They Blocked knox and route one for 30 minutes. The basketball Team took refuge in Fe while eveyrthing got handled so they wouldnt get in any trouble. The place was a Freaking Zoo.

And even if the f scheyer chants did keep us from being on ESPN, it would be pretty awesome to be the school that is too rowdy to televise.

I assume some of the students who liked the f*ck Scheyer quotes and don't seem to mind the mayhem on Route 1 will someday be joining the workforce. None of this helps the school's image with potential employers and reflects poorly on the school and its students. Certainly there are classier and more clever cheers to chant. Having said that i have no idea how you get thousands of students to stop chanting something. We saw how well it worked the band stopped playing the infamous "you suck-aka Rock and Roll Part 2" song just before tipoff. The students still chant it anyway.

everyone was at fault here. my apartment in commons looks right over route one and knox...i left the streets once it started to get out of hand. the students were at first just having a good time...drunkenly dancing in front of the horses etc....the only thing they did wrong was piss off the cops (and block the streets of course) but i feel like the cops took it to another level...they would tell the students to get out of there and once the students turned to leave they would just keep going at them...i have a video of two girls getting maced right in the face from close range as they were trying to get away. the worse i saw was some kid lying on the sidewalk getting beat by two cops with batons. the cops were definitely provoked by the relentless and taunting students, but they took it WAY too far. use the teargass and keep it at that. those big ass rubber ball guns were completely unnecessary.
ive always wanted to riot and it lived up to my expectation, but did that game really warrant a riot?

You get 4, maybe 5, years of college. Be as obnoxious, rude, crazy, stupid, drunk as you want when it comes to college sports while you attend school. Because after that, real life SUCKS.
Congrats terps.

Keep hating on Maryland. Some of the most passionate in the country. The cops made it worse, it got eveyone all riled up. I got maced in the face for cheering and the cop kept spraying me in the back when i turned and left. They were way too agressive. But great win, can't wait for the tournament. Proud to be a Maryland fan.
GO TERPS

So what...Everyone knows PG county 5.0 are some of the worst murderous, racist of any police dept. in the country and they provoked alot of that and Im white saying this. It aint a big win unless some couches are burned on Greek row.. Fear the rioters!

Okay first of all, to say that PG cops are murderous and racist is a pretty shitty generalization. Second of all, UMD needs to act like a first rate institution and not like WVU or something. It was classless

Can I just say that riots, cursing chants, and West Virginia fans all lead me to one conclusion: sportscasters' newfound opposition to storming the court is ridiculous. It's fun, it's celebratory, and it lets a little energy out before you go and party. Plus, it's far safer than the post-party...

Everyone shut up and stop acting like ur all saints. You all now claim that marylands such a bad place, lots of schools have so-called "Riots". I love how everyones quick to point fingures at maryland and I could tell probaly all you commenting against Maryland were just waiting to jump at the chance to find some reason to hate on Maryland. So a couple thousand people met up and celebrated, shut up and stop acting like college kids are supposed to be boy scouts. Claiming all this crap that other colleges would never do such a thing. JMU does it, North carloina does it, and im pretty sure many other schools ahve so called "Riots".

And second it wasnt the whole UMD population... its was a couple thousand kids at most like 1-2 thousand not all tens of thousands of Maryland students.

Gary needs to step up and be the one to get on the mic and tell the students that the Fuc# (insert players name) need to stop. The students will listen to him. If not, give the bench a T foul. It's classless and unnecessary, especially on national TV. Not to mention that there are young kids in attendance. THe students are giving themselves and the University a BAD reputation.

Also, I wouldn't call what happened after the game a riot... The police wanted and expected one, but it was 1,500 people celebrating, a few got out of line. The police wait all year for this stuff to hapen and can't wait to take out some agression on the students of UMD. It was way out of line on their part. I've been at other colleges when this has happened and the police are laid back and cool and let the crowds die down. It's not like the students were breaking into stores and looting, these cops were looking to have a good time themselves in a different way.

Yeak, you guys are right, a riot is called for when you beat a pretty good team (that Georgetown crushed) on your home court to get the 2nd seed in the ACC tourney...glad you set the bar so high...maybe that's why you attend Maryland and not Georgetown , Duke or any other institution that has tougher admission standards...MORONS.

@tor
Georgetown crushed Duke... well... Georgetown also lost to Old Dominion, South Florida, Rutgers.. the list goes on. Georgetown is quickly falling. Duke has higher admission standards? Maybe historically Duke has been viewed as a more challenging institution but over the past 5-10 years that has rapidly changed. The past two freshman classes at Maryland have had 65% of their students in the top 10% of their high school class. Duke only had 40%. Maryland's overall academics are quickly rising. Not to mention that Maryland's business and engineering schools are routinely ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
Duke was ranked 4th and the two teams have a huge historic rivalry. You want college students not to celebrate? You must be out of touch with reality. I was at route 1 after the game and what was called "rioting" was hardly a riot. A street sign was pulled out of the ground, several items were burned, and there were some loud chants. Is that really so horribly low for society compared to Georgetown and Duke students? We are sorry that some of us, especially with the recent economy struggles, cannot afford to spend nearly $240,000 for 4 years of undergraduate education at Georgetown. Maybe in-state tuition is a safe option for some people.
And it's obvious that "buisness" school was a typo. You seriously are going to judge a school on what someone said on a local sports forum? The people at Georgetown and Duke must be really great people...
Let's go through your earlier post. I'm not sure what "yeak" means. And the "..." is called an ellipsis. And after it, you put a space before the next word. Your first sentence was a run-on... what else...
Anyway, you shouldn't judge a school like that. It's obvious that you are shallow and inconsiderate of the bigger picture that is a college education. Would you like me to judge the entire Georgetown or Duke population on your posts? Well, then I guess you are all shallow, ignorant scum that did a little better on some standardized tests or possibly had some connections.
Either way, I have no respect for you.

Mr. Pittman (DM intern in 2005) told us "When Duke beats UMD, it's just another game but when UMD beats Duke, they treat it like they won the National Championship" Truth.
But I was there, it was fun, and some people were being assholes about it but the stop talking crap on the cops. You get that many drunk, rowdy college kids around you're gonna be on your toes.

maryland is not as good as school as georgetown
and georgetown is not as good as duke
all three are great colleges nevertheless, but don't try to argue the facts.
that said, this is not an academics site. its a sports site. and right now, maryland is playing better than georgetown
