Tough loss. Very tough loss. Terps showed a lot of heart getting back in it tho. Gotta give em credit. Cannot anticipate gettin beat by a buzzer beater.

When you don't defend any of the guards with seconds left, why can't you anticipate it. Defensive and turnovers killed the terps. Tragic sunday afternoon.

He made a tough 3 at the buzzer. The shot was well contested and Luscious was not square to the basket. He made a difficult shot to win the game, and you have to give him credit for that. Terps lost this game because they couldn't get on the glass and gave up too many second chance opportunities. At least we put up a fight down the stretch.

it wasnt defense as much as it was rebounding that killed maryland today. that and not pressuring the ball when their 4/5 guy was rushing it up the court at the end... unreal.

So where does this leave Maryland for next year?

First off, I have to say that Grievis, Eric, and Landon, are responsible for putting Maryland basketball back in the place where its supposed to be. From 2004-2007 this program was up and down and full of problems. These three seniors are the definition of class on the court and off it (MilitaryRD don't even say it). They have done so much for the program and they will truly be missed. I cant imagine watching a Terps game next year and not seeing Vasquez or Hayes. But I will be, so I might as start looking forward to it.
The starting line up will probably look like this: Bowie, Tucker, Mosley, Gregory, Williams. I know we lose a helluva lot in GV, EH, and LM. But these 5 guys are experienced, have been to the tournament, and know what it takes to win. We will struggle a litttle offensively probably for the first month or so, but I still expect us to come out strong at the beginning of the season. All 5 starters are athletic and play good defense. Our recruiting class is solid and I expect immediate production from Stoglin and Parker. Pe'Shon will contribute but might struggle a bit at first.
The ACC will be down again next year. UNC will probably be back in the tourney, and Duke will be a top 5 team. But outside of that, GT will lose Favors and Lawal, and no one else returns that much.
Way, way too early prediction- 22-10, 10-6 ACC.

I think that the Terps will struggle to find an identity with Vasquez leaving. Mosley and Bowie both can be effective scorers, but they need to be more aggressive and understand that the scoring load will primarily be on their shoulders. J Williams will continue to improve, so the Terps will be sound defensively and will eventually find ways to score. Expect the Terps to be back in the tourney next year, and they could finish ranked as well.

^Totally agree.
Next years team could make the Sweet 16 or lose in the 1st round. Its really all about match ups in the NCAA Tournament and we got screwed having to play Michigan State in the 2nd round. That team is no 5 seed. At least they didnt play like a 5 seed today. And it sucks because we had a favorable match up waiting for us. If that shot wouldnt have fallen, no doubt we would have made it to the Elite 8, or farther.

The Maryland fans we have on here are a lot more optimistic than the grizzled veterans on the UMD Scout.com boards (http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=174&f=2580&t=5761968). MD is going to struggle next year, no doubt.

Maryland was also going to finish 5th in the ACC this year and have to scramble for an NCAA birth. Oh wait that didn't happen either. Maryland has players that have shown a lot of promise, and a coach that is known for getting the most out of his players. Vasquez and Hayes were mainstays in the backcourt and it will take time to rebuild the chemistry that is lost there, but the Terps will ultimately take care of business and will have a solid season next year. They are strong defensively, have tons of potential on offense and the players have the intangibles necessary to make a difference in the close games. I don't need to be a scout to tell you that.

"Tom Izzo Called a Time out...."
No, he started to, then he didn't, and UMD's dreams were sunk.

See I disagree. A Stronger older Jordan Williams. Sean Mosley and Bowie not having to Deal with greievis Vasquez, and The incoming Parker at SF..... I am very very very excited for next season.

Also remember, for the first time since 2002 UMD finally has a legit big man (Lonny Baxter). The back court will be tough to replace no doubt, but let's face it, it's big men that make teams great. Just look at the Houston game- ZERO inside presence; therefore Jordan Williams took over and Maryland won. As long as the Terps find a PG who can run the offense and distribute the ball then they will be fie next year.

I agree with you that J Will we be a beast next year, and that Mosley or someone will break out offensively now that GV is gone. But "wont have to deal with him" implies that he somehow hurt us. Im pretty sure thats what you mean and I cannot believe what Im hearing. Well, I do, knowing that you have some past history with him. But come on. He single handily brought us back yesterday. Scored 9 of our last 11 points, hit two shots to take the lead, and if Lucious's shot wouldnt have fallen, GVs performance in that last 2 minute span would have been the best of the tournament and best of any Terp before. Losing GV will HURT us tremendously next year and I don't really think you can call yourself a Terp fan after all that GV has done for the program.

Yea Greivis was easily our biggest playmaker on offense and there is no one next year that will be able to carry us like he has at times in his career. That being said, I think that the team can do well next year feeding off one another because I don't see one person handling the scoring load like him. Although Mosley's talented I think he helps us most with the hustle plays, and I see cliff stepping up most offensively for us. I definately agree with you on williams I see him becoming an all-american sometime down the road if he stays all four years. I cant really talk about the incoming freshman because I don't know enough about them, but the recruiting sites are saying good enough things to where I'm real excited.
As for blakethesnake, I really think that guards are what makes a team great, atleast in the acc. Granted unc had hansborough last year, but they also had two great guards in lawson and ellington. Either way heartbreaking loss and should be interesting to see how good we can be next year

Love him or hate him, Greivis Vasquez put the Maryland basketball program back on the map, and he deserves credit for that. sure, he has an arrogant swagger and some of his antics can be unnerving, but GV played with heart and he was extremely productive on most nights. However, I will say that Mosley and Bowie will improve now that Greivis is gone because Greivis took most of the scoring load on his shoulders while Bowie and Mosley were role players for the most part. I think that the loss of Greivis will not hurt the Terps as much as most people think. Maryland has plenty of talent and will move on without No. 21.

put maryland back on the map? what's to show for it? having one quality win for the year and a share of the regular season acc title, getting booted in 2nd round of the acc and the ncaa tourney in an extremely down year for the conference? crawling to get in last year with another second round exit? i believe greivis has 3 2nd round exits and an nit berth for his career. call me crazy but maryland is not back on any map. when maryland gets back to being ranked in the top 15 year in year out then they are back, until then i dont think so.

When you are an all american, you get your team back to being consistent winners, and you have a share in the ACC title, regardless of how down the conference was, you are putting your program back on the map. I also like your convenient barometer of relevance, saying they have to be in the top 15 when they were in the top 20 this year. Also, last year when they scrambled to get in, Maryland's big man was a 6'7" guy with no hops and minimal athleticism. I'd love to see any team win with that formula. When Greivis came to Maryland, the team was in the dumps. He put them back in the rankings and made the program relevant again. End of story.
